Good call, Randy, that's reassuring to know. I hated to think Zappa had stumped VC, purportedly not only Zappa's favorite drummer but Zappa's favorite sideman of all time, and that's saying something. Jeff said Frank called him every few years to lay down some tracks but Jeffrey always begged off. How cool would it have been if Porcaro had done the Apostrophe album?

I do think that he was using some of Zappa's drums on that disc...the rotos and those hats sound like the Joe's Garage hats...

That tune Darlene has an interesting feel seems to be 5/8 into 6/8 and someother bits. Simon plays it well. I wonder how the first take sounded, because he sounds really comfortable with the tune.

I don't think there is anything Vinnie could be stumped on, he sight read his audition for Zappa including the Black Page. The way he sees things in his head is just amazing, not too many drummers can do that.
The L Shankar record was released in 79 but it may have been recorded earlier, even before Vinnie was in the Zappa band. Zappa is not alive to tell and the Zappa trust is very tough on getting info, but I suppose a question to Joe Travers might help, he runs the Zappa vault for the family.
It's known for fact that Zappa video taped many recording sessions including ALL of Joe's Garage, Vinnie in the studio with Zappa on video......It's there in the vault just waiting at some year to be released.

The Baby Snakes movie shows some verrrry interesting Zappa studio work, particularly the part where FZ is cueing Bozzio and two others by just pointing a finger at them. Each guy plays till Zap points to someone else. Sick, sicker, sickest!

Wonder if the Vinnie-eating-the-sushi-while-sightreading footage is in the vaults? That would be a perfect intro to an instructional Vinnievid. Get the petition out, I'll be the first to sign it!

Good luck with that! Gail Zappa has ill will towards fans so it might quite sometime before any of this sees day light. But knowing Zappa and how he recorded everything audio, if video was around then it's in the vault.

What's up with Gail Z? Frank was one of America's foremost modern composers and, as such, is an American icon himself. That mustache and soul patch are internationally recognized. Frank's wife could oversee his legacy with the elan and dignity it deserves. The fans kept her in nice houses, cars and groceries since the 60s. Dweezil, talk to your mom.

You could count the phrase as a bar of 4/4 + a bar of 9/8 or counted as two bars of 4/4 with the 'e' of the extra eighth note accented and tacked on the end.(now we're splitting hairs) The latter is way I think of it since he plays a consistent '2' and '4' until the extra note is placed on the end of the second measure. He puts an accent on the 'an' of 4 in the first measure that sort of ties the 4/4 and 9/8 together. Also, included in the liner notes I think Simon mentions it being in 17/8. Hope this helps.
